Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak at 5,199 meters, offers a more technical and diverse climbing experience than Kilimanjaro. This comprehensive Mt Kenya itinerary follows the spectacular Sirimon-Chogoria traverse, combining optimal acclimatization with breathtaking scenery. With pristine alpine lakes, unique Afro-alpine vegetation, and dramatic rock formations, Mount Kenya delivers an unforgettable East African mountain adventure.
Day 1: Sirimon Gate to Old Moses Camp (3,300m)
Your Mount Kenya trek begins at Sirimon Gate (2,650m) on the mountain’s drier northwestern side. After registration, you’ll trek 9 kilometers through montane forest and bamboo zones, taking 3-4 hours. The gentle 650-meter ascent follows a well-maintained trail through giant heather moorland with spectacular views of the surrounding valleys.
Wildlife sightings are common, including buffalo, elephants, and various antelope species. Old Moses Camp provides basic mountain huts or camping facilities with stunning evening views of the peaks above. This gradual first day allows gentle acclimatization while conserving energy for the challenging days ahead.
Day 2: Old Moses Camp to Shipton’s Camp (4,200m)
Day two covers 14 kilometers over 6-7 hours, ascending 900 meters into the high alpine zone. You’ll cross the dramatic Mackinder’s Valley, surrounded by towering rock faces and unique Afro-alpine vegetation including giant lobelias and groundsels that look like something from another planet.
The landscape becomes increasingly otherworldly as you gain altitude. Shipton’s Camp, nestled beneath the imposing north face of Batian and Nelion peaks, serves as your base for summit attempts. The camp offers both hut accommodation and camping spots with some of the most spectacular mountain views in East Africa. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing equipment for summit day.
Day 3: Summit Day – Shipton’s Camp to Point Lenana (4,985m) to Mintos Hut (4,300m)
Summit day begins around 3 AM for the 3-kilometer ascent to Point Lenana, Mount Kenya’s third-highest and most accessible peak. The 4-5 hour climb gains 785 meters through scree and rock scrambles, requiring headlamps and warm layers as temperatures drop well below freezing.
The route follows a steep path requiring some easy scrambling but no technical climbing skills. Reaching Point Lenana at sunrise rewards you with spectacular 360-degree views including Kilimanjaro on clear days. The twin peaks of Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m) tower above, accessible only to technical rock climbers.
After summit photos and celebration, you’ll descend via the scenic Chogoria Route, covering 10 kilometers to Mintos Hut (4,300m) over 3-4 hours. This traverse offers completely different scenery and perspectives of Mount Kenya, making it far more interesting than retracing your ascent route.
Day 4: Mintos Hut to Lake Ellis (3,600m)
Day four descends 8 kilometers through Mount Kenya’s most spectacular scenery, taking 4-5 hours. You’ll pass stunning alpine lakes including Lake Michaelson and Lake Alice, surrounded by dramatic gorges and waterfalls. The Gorges Valley features the famous Temple and Giant’s Billiards Table rock formations.
The Chogoria Route’s eastern side receives more rainfall, creating lusher vegetation and more dramatic water features than the Sirimon side. Lake Ellis Camp sits in a beautiful valley with crystal-clear streams and magnificent views. This shorter day allows recovery from summit efforts while immersing you in Mount Kenya’s pristine wilderness.
Day 5: Lake Ellis to Chogoria Gate (2,950m)
Your final day covers 16 kilometers through bamboo forest and montane vegetation to Chogoria Gate, taking 4-5 hours. The 650-meter descent through increasingly dense forest brings you back to warmer temperatures and thicker air—a welcome change after high altitude.
The trail passes through pristine forest with possible wildlife encounters including black and white colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and numerous bird species. At Chogoria Gate, transportation typically meets climbers for the scenic drive down to Chogoria town, where you can celebrate your achievement with a hot meal and shower.
Alternative Mt Kenya Routes
Naro Moru Route: The fastest and most direct route to Point Lenana, taking 4-5 days. This route features the infamous “Vertical Bog”—a challenging section through muddy moorland. While quicker, Naro Moru offers less scenic variety and steeper acclimatization.
Chogoria Route (Up and Down): Ascending and descending via Chogoria takes 5-6 days and is considered Mount Kenya’s most beautiful route. The gradual approach through bamboo forests and spectacular gorges provides excellent acclimatization.
Sirimon Route (Up and Down): A 4-5 day trek ascending and descending the northwestern side. This route offers good acclimatization and consistent scenery but lacks the diversity of traverse routes.
Best Time to Climb Mount Kenya
Mount Kenya can be climbed year-round, but the best conditions occur during the dry seasons: January to February and July to October. These periods offer clearer skies, less precipitation, and better summit views. The wettest months (April-May and November) bring muddy trails and obscured views, though the mountain sees fewer crowds.
Essential Mount Kenya Preparation
Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya requires some scrambling ability and comfort with steeper, rockier terrain. Point Lenana is non-technical, but the loose scree and pre-dawn darkness demand sure-footedness. Proper acclimatization is crucial—altitude sickness affects many climbers who ascend too quickly.
Pack warm layers for summit night when temperatures drop to -10°C or lower. Quality waterproof gear is essential, even during dry seasons, as mountain weather changes rapidly. Trekking poles significantly help on steep descents.
Mount Kenya vs Kilimanjaro
Mount Kenya offers a more rugged, wilderness experience than Kilimanjaro with fewer climbers, more diverse scenery, and more challenging terrain. While lower in altitude, the quicker ascent profile makes acclimatization more challenging. The technical peaks (Batian and Nelion) provide options for experienced mountaineers seeking alpine climbing adventures.
