There are seven main routes up to choose from. The particular route you choose will largely depend on your level of experience, fitness, budget and time frame – as well as your personal wants. It’s well worth looking at each of them to pick the best way to climb Kilimanjaro for you – we’ve gone into more detail in our article on the different routes up Kilimanjaro.
Machame Route: The Whiskey Route
A tougher climb than Marangu, Machame is known for being one of the most scenic routes. You descend on a different path to the ascent, giving you a great diversity of scenery. Good acclimatisation options; higher altitude days with lower altitude camps. One of our recommended routes.
The Machame Route is the most popular path up Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. This 6-7 day trek offers stunning scenery, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and a high success rate of around 85%. The route approaches from the south, traversing through lush rainforest before ascending to the Shira Plateau and around the southern circuit.
What makes Machame ideal is its “climb high, sleep low” profile, which naturally aids acclimatization. The trail is challenging but manageable for hikers with good fitness levels. Expect steep sections, particularly on summit night, but the varied landscapes—from tropical forests to alpine deserts—make every day visually rewarding.
Lemosho Route: The Scenic Champion
For those seeking the most scenic Kilimanjaro experience with optimal acclimatization, the Lemosho Route stands out. This 7-8 day journey begins on the western side of the mountain, offering remote wilderness experiences and spectacular views throughout.
The Lemosho Route has a success rate of approximately 90%, making it one of the best options for reaching Uhuru Peak. The longer duration and gradual ascent profile give your body more time to adjust to altitude. While it’s pricier than other routes due to its length and remote access, the investment pays dividends in comfort and summit success.
Marangu Route: The Coca-Cola Route
The Marangu Route is often called the “easiest” Kilimanjaro route, though this reputation can be misleading. It’s the only route offering hut accommodation instead of camping, which appeals to those preferring more comfort. The 5-6 day standard itinerary follows a gradual ascent and descent on the same path.
However, Marangu’s success rate of around 70% is lower than other routes, primarily because many climbers attempt it in just five days—insufficient time for proper acclimatization. If you choose Marangu, opt for the six-day itinerary to significantly improve your chances of success.
Rongai Route: The Northern Approach
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. This 6-7 day trek offers a gentler gradient and experiences less rainfall than southern routes. It’s an excellent choice during the rainy season and for climbers who prefer a quieter trail with fewer trekkers.
The Rongai Route has a success rate of about 80% and is considered one of the easier routes technically. However, its steady, continuous ascent provides less ideal acclimatization compared to routes with more varied elevation profiles.
Northern Circuit: The Longest and Newest
The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s longest route at 8-9 days, circumnavigating the mountain and approaching the summit from the north. This route boasts the highest success rate—over 95%—thanks to its extended duration and excellent acclimatization profile.
If you have the time and budget, the Northern Circuit offers the most comprehensive Kilimanjaro experience. You’ll enjoy 360-degree views of the mountain, encounter fewer crowds, and give yourself the best possible chance of standing on the Roof of Africa.
Choosing Your Perfect Route
When selecting your Kilimanjaro route, consider your fitness level, available time, budget, and preferences for scenery versus solitude. Routes like Lemosho and Northern Circuit offer better acclimatization and higher success rates, while Machame provides an excellent balance of challenge, scenery, and value.
